Q. When did you know you wanted to be a writer and what inspired you?
A. I've wanted to be a writer ever since I can remember. I got great encouragement from my mom, who was a teacher, and from my English teachers at school. There was one teacher in particular, in high school, who said: "I'll keep a place open on my bookshelf for your best-seller." I haven't made it that far - yet!

Q. How do you get ideas for stories?
A. I get story ideas from just about everywhere: from watching my kids (I have three - 15, 14 and 7 years old); from watching my dog (She's almost 3 years old!); from reading books; and from asking questions (and then finding out the answers!).

Q. How long does it take you to complete a book?
A. Good question. A novel I wrote took me about three years because I only worked on it for short periods at a time. Picture books usually take a few months. My craft books took about 2 or 3 months each to finish.

Q. Did you have any role models as a child and who were they?
A. My mom was my role model. She told me I could be anything I wanted to be.

Q. Do you have any advice for kids who want to write or illustrate?
A. Future writers need to read everything they can. They shouldn't limit themselves to one subject. They should read about everything that interests them! Ask questions and learn about lots of things. And, of course, they need to write, write, write! Future illustrators should learn as much as they can about as many different types of art as they can by reading books about art and artists, visiting art museums and galleries, and by taking art classes whenever they get a chance.

Q. Do you have any pets or a favorite animal?
A. Yes, I have a dog named Black Velvet. She is half German Short-Hair Pointer and English Sheep Dog, but she looks like she's half Black Lab and half Greyhound!

Q. What are your hobbies?
A. Yes, I have a dog named Black Velvet. She is half German Short-Hair Pointer and English Sheep Dog, but she looks like she's half Black Lab and half Greyhound!
