Q. When did you know you wanted to be a writer and what inspired you?
A. I knew I wanted to be a writer when I was in high-school. I was also in the Drama Club in H.S., and I wanted to be an actress. I grew up in Brooklyn, NY and went to the theatre as often as I could. That inspired me to start writing plays. I still wear two hats: I write plays for adults and books for young people. I love writing both.
Q. How do you get ideas for stories?
A. I get ideas for stories from places, people, even bits of conversation I overhear. People I meet often wind up in my "character barrel." Later, I use descriptions of them or the way they speak in writing plays or stories.
Q. How long does it take you to complete a book?
A. I often work on a book as long as three years, especially if I have to do research. I write a first draft then revise several times before it's finished.
Q. Did you have any role models as a child and who were they?
A. My role model as a child was my mother's sister. She swam almost every day from June till September at Brighton Beach. She continued that routine till she was very old. She was a a long-distance swimmer and nothing scared her, not even the tall waves at Brighton Beach, in Brooklyn. She taught me to swim in the ocean when I was about six years old. If a wave knocked me down, I learned to get up and try again.
Q. Do you have any advice for kids who want to write or illustrate?
A. My advice to kids who wants to write or illustrate is to read, read, read and then write a lot and draw a lot. You can never practice too much. And never give up!
Q. Do you have any pets or a favorite animal?
A. My pet is a dog named Winnie. She fun to play with, and I walk her at least once a day. If you go to my website: you can see a picture of me with Winnie.
Q. What are your hobbies?
A. My hobbies are reading, hiking, whether I'm home or traveling, going to the movies, listening to music and going to the theatre.
