Q. When did you know you wanted to be a writer and what inspired you?
A. I have always been an artist but I fell in love with the picture books my wife was collecting for her kindergarten class. In order to break in to children's book publishing as an illustrator, I decided to write my own stories so that I could do the illustrations.
Q. How do you get ideas for stories?
A. Different ways for every book. Several ideas have come from observing my children. Other ideas have come like bolts from the blue. I have no predictable method. Good ideas are like gifts. They surprise me and are often unexpected.
Q. How long does it take you to complete a book?
A. I can do, usually, about two books a year. The writing far less time than the illustrating. I can sketch, revise and illustrate a book in four to five months. The writing happens in a couple weeks.
Q. Did you have any role models as a child and who were they?
A. My Dad and my uncle were WWII veterans and I was very interested in the war, which had ended only ten years before I started school. I treasured then and still treasure their stories.
Q. Do you have any advice for kids who want to write or illustrate?
A. Yes. Three tips--Write a lot. Draw a lot. Read a lot.
Q. Do you have any pets or a favorite animal?
A. We have two cats, Cody and Friskie. I've always had cats in the family. They are, in my opinion, essential.
Q. What are your hobbies?
A. Reading is my #1 hobby. My wife and I still collect picture books even though our kids are now grown and she no longer teaches. I also collect medieval coins from England, particularly those mentioned in old Mother Goose rhymes. I like to sketch landscapes. And for sport, I play tennis.
